The Product

Movieland is an app for movie seat reservations. The app has features like unlimited seat reservations per user, split tickets where we can split the total amount in half with our friends and family.

Problem

Movie buffs and busy workers want to spend some of their quality time watching movies without any difficulties.

Solution

With the Movieland app, users can reserve their seats, split and share tickets.

Understand the Users

I conducted personal and online interviews to understand the users. A primary user group identified through research was working adults who had different work schedules and could not find time to watch movies as they wished.

More than time, there were other problems with users like waiting for the tickets in a queue, knowing which movie was showing and the number of tickets booked, etc

Persona

Bhavana kashyap.jpg

Bhavana

Age: 48
Location: Bengaluru
Education: MA
Hometown: Mysuru

Goals

  • To spend some time with family.

  • An option to book the whole theatre.

Frustration

  • Hard to wait for ticket between men.

  • Unable to get tickets due to houseful shows.

I would probably say escapism is necessary for a while for every individual .

Bio

Bhavana, a 48-year-old married woman, takes care of her children alone in India while her husband works in the US. She is working as a professor at Bangalore University. She also works as a language teacher in a coaching class at the weekends. Due to her hectic schedule, she would like to plan and book the tickets for movies at least a week prior so she can be prepared for her weekend plans with her kids.

Bhavana's User Journey

Mapping Bhavana’s user journey revealed how helpful it would be for the users to have a dedicated movie seat booking app which can even book the whole theater and even customize the movie time and shows. .

So, why is Bhavana frustrated?

It is hard for her to stand in the queue for movie tickets all surrounded by men, many times they have returned without tickets due to houseful shows.

Storyboard

So before the ideation, I did a close up story board in order to understand how the user would react to the situation.

Paper Wireframes

Taking the time to draft iterations of each screen of the app on paper ensured that the elements that made it to digital wireframes would be well-suited to address user pain points.

Paper to Digital

As the initial design phase continued, I made sure to implement designs based on user research.

User Research round 2

I conducted two rounds of usability studies. Findings from the first study helped guide the designs from wireframes to mockups. The second used a high-fidelity prototype and revealed what aspects of the product need refining.

Round 1 findings

Round 2 findings

3

Users want to select seats easily.

2

Users want a split ticket option.

1

Users want to book the whole theater.

3

Customized show options need to be added.

Users want to select seats easily.

2

Users couldn’t find a share ticket option.

1

I made two major changes based on the user research

1. Split Tickets

Earlier, there was no option for “Split Tickets”, now I added “Split Tickets” option on the payment summary screen.

2. Customized Shows

After the second usability study, I added a button to book the whole theater and customize the show on the homepage, which brings down the lengthy steps to customize shows.

Accessibility Considerations

1

Used icons to
help make
navigation easier.

2

Provided access
to users who are vision impaired through adding alt text to movie posters for screen readers.

3

Added wheelchair symbols in seating rows for users to select seats for wheelchair accessible cinema halls.

It worked!

The final high-fidelity prototype was designed after all the usability studies. It also met user needs for split tickets and customization of shows.

"My overall experience was great! The app is super easy to use, I am waiting to use the real app soon."

What I learned?

This was the first UX design project that I completed. I learned the UX design process from start to finish. The Google UX design course helps a lot and is easier to understand without any knowledge about it. While designing the Movieland app, I learnt how initial research and usability studies make a difference in the final product. Every step of designing is an improvement on the previous version, which finally improves the overall experience.
